Help with your rent

Help with your rent

If you need help to pay your rent, are of working age and have less than 3 dependent children living in your household, you may be entitled to Universal Credit.

If you are not of working age or have 3 or more dependent children living in your household, you could be entitled to Housing Benefit.

Do not delay in making a claim for either benefit as they will not backdate (unless exceptional circumstances).

Universal Credit

Universal Credit is a new benefit which supports people who are out of work or on a low income. It replaces a number of benefits which include;

  • Housing Benefit
  • Jobseekers Allowance
  • Employment Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit

Universal Credit will affect the way current benefits are paid.

  • Universal Credit will be paid directly into your bank account
  • You’ll get one monthly payment for your whole household.
  • Any help you get with your rent will be included in your payment.
  • You’ll have to pay your landlord yourself.

If you are struggling to meet your rent payments and claiming Universal Credit (or about to) please contact Alice Harvey on 01508 535619 or Diane Marshall on 532025 as soon as possible for help and advice.

Housing Benefit

To claim Housing Benefit please contact your local council.

Housing Benefit can be paid in addition to other benefits. You can choose to have this paid to Saffron Housing or to yourself. This benefit will pay 4 weekly (28 days).

If you have your Housing Benefit paid to Saffron, you will need to ensure that all your rent is covered if there is a shortfall.

Change in circumstances

If you are receiving help to pay your rent and your circumstances change, you must notify Universal Credit or your local council immediately. This may affect your entitlement.

Changes could include; change of address, income, rent or who lives with you.
