News update

26 Jul 2010

From the first of July, John Whitelock joined the Executive Team as Director of New Business taking on a new role combining the housing development side of Saffron Housing Trust with bringing in new services and opportunities. Some of our customers will know John as he has been with Saffron, initially with the supported housing team, since it started six years ago. He is looking forward to his new role and believes that Saffron is well placed to help develop new services for tenants and the wider community. Saffron is also delighted to welcome new Board members, South Norfolk Councillors Eloise Ellis and John Overton.

Shared Ownership

What is shared ownership?

Shared ownership is a scheme to help first-time buyers get a foot on the property ladder. You buy a share in the property, typically 50%, and pay a subsidised rent on the remainder. In the future you can buy further shares and eventually own the property outright.

Saffron Housing Trust will be building some new shared ownership properties which will be advertised when the building commences. We also notify people on the South Norfolk Housing Register of shared ownership properties that come up for resale in their area.

Who can apply for shared ownership?

You must be able to raise the purchase price of the share on offer (usually by mortgage) and be able to afford all the monthly payments - i.e. mortgage, rent and service charge.

Existing homeowners do not qualify and you must have indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom.

You would normally only be considered for the local council area in which you currently live or work. Priority is usually given to existing council and housing association tenants, key workers (essential public sector - e.g. teachers, NHS staff, police), and people registered on the council waiting list.

How can I apply/receive more information about the scheme?
